The BMW 2002 is practical, roomy and economical.
But in spite of all that it isn’t boring.

Most cars simply are not built to preform in such a way that driving becomes an end – not merely a means of getting somewhere.

The BMW, on the other hand, is.

If a single generalization could be made to describe all BMW automobiles, it would be that each is a unique combination not only of the refined luxury you’d expect in a costly European car, but also of the extraordinary performance you’d expect only in a sports car.

What is it that makes a car so impressive that – for six years running – the readers of Car & Driver magazine voted it “The Best Sports Sedan in the World”?

Technically, the 2002 is a combination of an exceptionally responsive 2-liter engine, legendary suspension, unusually reliable performance, innovative safety features, efficient user of fuel and practical use of space.

But, in truth, the 2002 is as much a product of a state of mind about building cars as the certain way it preforms.
In an age of mass-produced status symbols, marketing geniuses and styling breakthroughs, the engineers at BMW concentrate on building the best driving machines it is physically and technically possible to build.

If the thought of owning such a car intrigues you, we suggest you aquatint yourself with your BMW dealer. And make an appointment for a test drive.

The ultimate driving machine.

Add the reflexes of electronic fuel injection to the agility of front-wheel drive and you’ve got one hell of a machine.
Introducing the Renault 17 Sports Coupe

Either refinement alone would make for a markedly better sports coupe. Together they knock the competition on its..ear.
The Bosch fuel injection system takes continuous readings on variables like engine temperature, intake manifold pressure and r.p.m.’s, and feeds the data into a 220 component electronic “brain”.
The net result is a fantastically responsive gas pedal. Immediate. Unbalky. As advanced as the car it propels. If fuel injection is a better way to make an engine go, front-wheel drive is a better way to make a car go. Front-wheel drive allows our Sports Coupe to gobble up curves, ignore crosswinds, and sneer at ice and snow.
It also comes packed with these standard features:
4-on-the-floor gear box, rack-and-pinion steering, steel-belted radials, OHV hemi-head engine (0-60 in 10.7), disc brakes all around, tachometer, electric windows, molded bucket seats, carpeting, and tinted glass. We could go on. $4,175*

RENAULT
World’s largest producer f front-wheel drive cars.
*Suggested price P.O.E Slightly higher on the West Coast. Freight, taxes, options and preparation additional. Renault, Inc, 100 Sylvan Avenue. Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632

Another First for Mazda: A Quicker Automatic.

The rotary engine has been recognized by top automotive writers a the biggest innovation in decades.
That’s why FORTUNE Magazine called Mazda, “A car that may reshape the industry’s future”
Now Mazda has come up with the biggest development since the rotary engine: a automatic to match it.
To test this new performance pair, we pitted our car with its automatic against a couple of able competitors with their automatics at Pomona Raceway. Results:

Standing Start 1/4 mile

MAZDA

VEGA

PINTO

MPH

78.19

70.57

71.09

Elapsed time – Seconds

17.867

19.559

19.911

Test sanctioned by National Hot Rod Association.
What won the face for Mazda? The rotary engne? Or the new automatic?
Both. Naturally, the rotary gave us a head start. Nothing in its class can stay on the same track with it. But, we had to have the right running made, too.
One that doesn’t sap its strength. One that puts all that torque to work. One that keeps the power manageable at all times. And provides a smooth, quick, turbine-like response.
Now it’s available. Not just on test tracks, but at your Mazda dealer’s. In five models – Sport Coupes, Sedans and a Wagon.
Things will never be the same in the small-car world. Now you don’t have to be stuck with an anemic performer. Even if your wife or girlfriend insists on an automatic.
To find the Mazda dealer nearest to you, phone the toll-free number anytime. 800-447-4700. (In Illinois, 800-322-4400.) Dial as you normally dial long distance.
Mazda, Still the only rotary engine car in America.
Mazda’s rotary engine licensed by NSU-Wankel.

How Mercury’s Sales Records Can Put Money In Your Pocket

Mercury’s growth means you save when you buy. With a 480% increase in Mercurys on the road since 1946, Mercury dealers sell more cars per dealer than their competition. This higher volume means they have lower overhead expense per car sold, can give you a better deal – even on the Sun Valley shown above.
You save when you sell – The same features that make Mercury so popular now help keep it in big demand. You can command a better price when you eventually trade. Proof? Mercury consistently leads its class forr trade-in value accordng to independant national market reports of used-car prices.
It pays to own a Mercury. Its all-new 161-hp V-8 engine is one of the most efficient in our economy-famous history. You save as you drive. And you get new ball-joint front suspension for even easier handling. Better see your Mercury dealer for a trial drive.
Thirty-five years ago, the Ford Motor Company manufactured its first automobile. The accumulated experience of all those thirty-five years now finds expression in an entirely new car, the Mercury 8 … designed to extend Ford-Lincoln standards of mechanical excellence, progressive design and outstanding value to a new price field.

The New Mercury 8
A product of the Ford Motor Company

There’s something as new as the Spring in the clean, sweeping lines of the Mercury 8. It is a wide, remarkably roomy car, but skillful design has made its bulk beautiful. – There’s extra smoothness and silence, too, as well as extra space. Soundproofing materials help to eliminate noise and vibration. Restful quiet is as much a part of Mercury comfort as are soft deep seats. – The Mercury has hydraulic brakes and a brilliant, economical new 95 horsepower V-type 8-cylinder engine.
Ed Sullivan. M.C. of Toast of the Town, and Julia Meade introduce New Lincoln. Monitor sets show new rear deck, new longer body, new front assembly.

Camera one! Close up! Take the new Lincoln for 1955

First you notice its unusual beauty; the dramatic new tail-lights, the sweep of the chrome, the new front end treatment, the 11 1/2 inch longer body, the lower, flowing look.
But perhaps even more exciting is the story on performance – further enhanced by new Turbo-Drive – biggest news in no-shift driving in almost 15 years. Here is no frustrating lag, no unpleasant jerk, but one unbroken sweep of silent power, from zero to superhighway speeds.
Turbo-Drive is especially designed and built to work in harmony with Lincoln’s brand new, high torque V-8 engine for 1955. But you must feel this action to believe it. You Lincoln dealer will be glad to let you drive a Lincoln or a Lincoln Capri. You’ll know you’ve made a wonderful discovery the moment that Lincoln’s wheels begin to turn.

Look at the car – and you know the man likes action
Nowadays, you can tell the man by the car he keeps.
Obviously, the car you see here belongs to a person who like to go places. And he likes to get there with a minimum of effort and a maximum of pleasure.
We had such a man in mind when the design of this 1955 Lincoln began. And we have our designers and engineers a goal that we believe has been achieve.
The ain was this: to build a fine car with action to surpass any other car – with beauty to match the tastes of Americans on the move who demand the finest.
Lincoln achieves matchless action with its new Turbo-Drive and new high torque V-8 engine. These two combine to set a new standard for fine-car performance.
Here is a new combination of utter smoothness with ultra quick acceleration. No jerk, no lag – just one unbroken sweep of power from zero to superhighway speed limits.
If you want a car with performance far ahead of its time – a car with beauty that speaks for itself and says so much about your own good taste – the new 1955 Lincoln is for you.
Prove it to yourself with a visit to your Lincoln dealer, to look at a new Lincoln Capri – and to drive one.
